What is an Automatic Fire Sprinkler System?A fire sprinkler system is designed to prevent loss of life and property in the event of a fire emergency. | By ProMatcher Staff | Updated: 07/14/2016 | | How does it work?
An automatic fire sprinkler system uses a network of water pipes and strategically-positioned sprinkler heads to stop the spread of a fire. Fire sprinkler systems can be installed in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
If there's a fire, will all of the sprinkler heads go off?
No, you don't have to worry about your entire building flooding. Each sprinkler head is activated individually. Water is only discharged from the sprinkler heads located in close proximity to the fire.
What type of fire sprinkler systems are available?
There are two main types of automatic fire sprinkler systems: wet pipe and dry pipe systems.
» Wet pipe systems
Wet pipe systems are the most popular option. These systems can be installed in areas where there is no threat of freezing. With a wet pipe system, water remains in the sprinkler’s network of pipes at all times.
» Dry pipe systems
Dry pipe systems are commonly installed in unheated areas, like attics, basements, and warehouses. The water pipes are filled with pressurized air in their resting state. This helps to prevent burst pipes and other plumbing issues associated with colder temperatures. When the sprinkler system detects fire, the air pressure drops, the pipes fill with water, and the activated sprinkler head opens.
